About the Artist
Urban Disciple is not only a gospel rap artist, he is also a full time inner-city youth pastor to over 150 youngsters at Crossover Community Church in Tampa, FL. Their Thursday night youth service is specifically geared to reach the Hip-Hop Culture. Graffiti-covered vans go to the city's roughest neighborhoods to pick up youth to bring them to a service that includes urban style praise and worship. There's a live DJ scratching and mixing, break dancing classes, open mic nights, guest rap groups, and of course...the Word of God preached in a relevant form. The Majority of these teens now have a relationship with Christ.
Being raised in Philadelphia, Urban Disciple, has deep roots in the Hip-Hop Culture. He strayed from God as a teen, but recommitted his life to Christ at the age of 18. He felt a call from God to go into urban youth ministry. He went on to study at Southeastern College in Lakeland, FL, where he graduated in 1996 with a BA degree in pastoral studies. Urban Disciple. then went to Tampa, where he began his youth ministry with 4 teens at Crossover. In late 1996, he recorded his first CD entitled, "Keep it Real". Many doors opened as he began to travel across the state. In the spring of 1998 he released his second CD entitled "The Answers", which became an underground hit selling several thousand copies. He began ministering at several events up and down the East Coast, seeing thousands impacted by the gospel. CMN Records chose the song "Roots", featuring Cruz Cordero of The Cross Movement to go on their national compilation album, "Godzhouse.com", which was released in May 1998. R! oots became the hot track receiving a lot of national air play, which brought more attention to Urban Disciple's Unique ministry.
In November 1998, Urban Disciple signed nationally with Seventh Street Records. He flew to LA in December to record his new album entitled "The Missin' Element". A video was also shot to the song "Skintone". His East Coast style has a lot of Mediterranean and Spanish influence, which also includes some smooth R & B tracks. Guests include Dirt, Sup the Chemist, Sons of Intellect, and La Familia of 813. Producers include Kirk Martin of Take Flite Entertainment of LA, and T.R.U.-L.I.F.E. of The Cross Movement from Philly. This album's variety of styles and topics definitely has a little something for everyone. It highlights the true elements of Hip-Hop, but emphasizes "The Missin' Element", a relationship with Christ!
